001: Generation X and Magick: Breaking Down the Walls

Shows March 1st, 2006

Magickal workers born into Generation X are just beginning to take the stage in the publishing industry and on the teaching circuit. Frequently typified as bitter and disenfranchised youth, GenX is a generation that is not content with easy answers and prefers to define its own rules. So what does this boundary-pushing generation bring to the magickal arena? We interview author Christopher Penczak, a vibrant representative of the GenX mentality with nearly a dozen books under his belt. Penczak, like most Gen Xer’s is not content with answers that have been accepted out of habit or tradition, instead asking hard questions, breaking down artificial boundaries, and redefining the rules of magick, ritual, and deity.

Great podcast! I will be staying tuned in. I’ve come to learn about Michelle through Don Henrie’s website/message board… which is how I came to find this podcast. I am beginning to get familar with Michelle’s work… lol I’m actually bidding on the Vampire Codex on Ebay. I’ve been lurking around the Kheperu website soaking up what’s there like a sponge. In the podcast the audience was prompted to come here and comment on how and when they where drawn into Magick/Occult. I personally was a holy rollin’, tongue talkin, Holy Ghost Baptized, Fundamentalist Christian from The Church of God. After a life changing devastation I turned my back on the church and the Christian God. I found Wicca and Witchcraft. However I still felt the call of the Holy Spirit and Jesus. The more I studied the occult, magick, and paganism I noticed similarities between the Pentecostal movement in Christianity and Magick. I refused to just sit back and just be forced fed the retoric that all the preachers were forcing down my throat. I questioned the gender of the Godhead. I questioned what place all the other texts that didn’t make the cut in the canonized Bible had in the bigger picture. I questioned what part Gnostic scriptures played. I hungered for answers. That’s when I realized my calling… to follow both Christianity, Wicca and Magick. I am a Christian Wiccan, Christian Witch, Kitchen Witch. There’s my two cents on the matter. I look forward to future podcasts. Keep up the great work!Much love going out to both of you!

I’m glad to see this up and running — I always like intelligent stuff to listen to. Your production quality is good, too — maybe too good! At music-quality meg-a-minute encoding, 45+MB podcasts will eat up my (older, smaller) laptop’s memory. Maybe you can use 48 or less kbps encoding for the voice bits, maybe keeping 128kbps for music sections that you want to presevre. Cuts down on bandwidth, usage too.

Bidding at auction, ms. Valkyrie? That copy had better have some extra-special goodies in it; you can get a copy at Barnes&Noble for $20 (you may have to ask them to order it, even though I’ve never seen a copy stay on the shelf more than a few days while a certain horribly fat book with a still from “The Lost Boys” on its cover hangs around like a rotting corpse nobody wants to acknowledge).

Although I am a bit late in listening to this, I thought that this was a really good podcast. It was extremely informative and gave me some things to think about. I will probably listen to it again before writing on the discuss page. This was a great idea and I can’t wait to listen to the other ones as well. It was very discriptive and helpful in answering the questions which came at the end. I think everyone did a profound job in producing this.

This really gave me a lot of things to think about and I’m glad it is up in running. GenX is a notion that goes hand in hand with revolution. We are just taking the next step in the history of human beings. Revolution = Evolution
